Longs Peak

Longs Peak is located in Rocky Mountain National Park, and the first time I climbed the mountain was on New Years Eve in 1988. I carried a small VHS video camcorder and produced the first of three videos on Longs. The New Years Eve Expedition was personal, and the video was done for fun with no intent to make money. The other two climbs on Longs were produced to make money, which they didn’t, and also to have fun, which they did.

The New Years Eve expedition was led by Mike Donahue, who owned the Colorado Mountain School in Estes Park and I was a recurring client. Mike was a remarkable person who died in 2005 at the age of 59. Please read his obituary published in the Denver Post. This upscaled version of the original video is dedicated to the memory of Mike. He touched me and many, many others.

The second video on Longs was part of the “Climb the Rockies” video trail guide series. This segment featured Charles and Brenda Gaughan, who married not long after this video was shot. Charles produced the music included in the video.

The third climb on Longs was for a 30-minute TV show that ran on various cable TV channels at the time including TLC. It includes a 60-second “Per Inquiry” ad with an 800 number to call to order a copy of the “Climb the Rockies” VHS videos. This was the era of videotape rentals at neighborhood Blockbuster stores. You know, before the Internet. This segment featured Jack Gorby and Leslie Kermath, with the Colorado Mountain School.
